Winter dryness is so not fun and it happens to all of us at some point in time. Here are some great tips to stop the scratching and bring back that healthy silky summer feel again.
1. Winter means heaters and hotter air conditioned rooms mean less moisture in the air, which dries out your skin.
Wear a few more layers and turn the heater down a bit, if you can, install a humidifier and set the humidity at a constant 45% to 55%. Remember never sit directly in front and up close to the heater no matter how tempted you are.
2. In colder weather we often don’t drink as much water compared to the warmer months.
Obvious as this is, our bodies still need plenty of water to keep them hydrated. You should still be drinking 2 litres of water even on a cold day.
3. Cold winter mornings mean hot steamy showers.
That intense heat actually breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin leading to a loss of moisture. So turn the water temperature down to warm and reap the rewards.
4. Chemicals in soaps and body washes.
Many soaps and body washes contain chemicals that can strip your skin of its natural moisture causing dryness. They are also absorbed into the skin and can cause irritation that can increase itchiness. Use a natural unscented cleanser instead, such as a goats milk or almond soap.
5. Dry and dead skin cells actually absorb less moisture.
Try dry body brushing before you have your shower. This will open your pores and remove those dead skin cells without stripping your skin of its natural oils. But best of all your soft new skin will absorb moisturisers better.
6. Out of sight out of mind. We tend to neglect our legs more over winter as they are not on show as much.
Create a moisture seal. After bathing, while your skin is still wet rub your whole body over with a natural organic oil, like almond, coconut or Morrocan argan oil, then gently pat your skin dry. Remember don’t rub with your towel.
Try these tips and say goodbye to itchy winter legs and enjoy the change of season.
