We are creatures of habit, who have been using plastic bags to line our bins for years. Now with the looming and positive prospect of no more free shopping bags at supermarkets, will we be creating a new problem by buying plastic bin liners instead?

Well this seems to be what has happened historically, both in Australia and overseas.

When Ireland placed a tax on plastic shopping bags in 2002 they had a 77% increase in sales of commercial plastic bin bags, with figures skyrocketing from roughly 91 million to 161 million.

And at home, when the ACT banned plastic bags in 2011 the government reported a 36% decrease in the number of single use plastic bags reaching landfill. However they also reported an increase in bin liner bags being purchased.

Will the rest of Australia tread the same path..? We won’t have to if we make one simple switch…

You can always skip lining your bin altogether and wash it out after emptying. Or, why not think outside the box and try lining your bins with something other than plastic…
